IPv4 dying in 10months. Is it Y2k11?

IPv4 is a 32bit Internet Protocol system which can hold only up to 4 billion addresses. The Internet agencies knew that 4billion addresses will short fall very soon, because of the massive avalanche of people getting online. Every mobile phone and some gadgets are getting online too in comparison of the computer systems around the world. So the IT industry started working on the newer version called IPv6 (IP version 6) since last 10 years.

Y2K was the biggest problem the computer industry was foreseeing before the start of this new millennium. The computer system was only able to store the last two digits of the year (1999 would be only represented by 99) and the fear was that when the clock will struck 00hours on 31st December 1999, all the computer systems will go back to the date of 1900 instead of 2000.

Now Internet and IT experts say that we are going to face a similar kind of critical problem in less than a year, when the current system of Internet Protocol will run out of addresses. Whenever you connect to an Internet, your computer or mobile or anything with which you are connecting to the Internet is giving a specific address which is unique worldwide, to identify your device. So the maximum users which can get online at the same time according to the current system IPv4 system is 4billion.

Experts have analyzed the growth rate of Internet usage and predicted that within less than 12 months time, over 4billion devices will come online. So on a massive scale, the overall structure of the Internet is going to take a turn. In next few months we might have to face slow Internet speed or total disconnection because of the new system being introduced. The worst problem would be that the basic users of Internet does not even know about the IPv6. They only know the current 192.168.1.1 type of system. Where as the new system is an alpha-numeric system of 128bit (e.g. 2001:db8:85a3::8a2e:370:7334). The backbone of Internet can be shifted easily because we have network experts which know the new system. But teaching the common layman user might take some time.

So I guess we are going to hit the bottom within year 2010 or the early 2011 thats why I called it the “IP Y2K11″ problem.

Pakistan blocked Facebook, Youtube, Flickr, etc.

On 19th May 2010, Pakistani government got active against the drawings of Muslims last prophet Muhammad (pbuh) over the Internet. Molly Norris initially started this issue and Muslims were already angry at the Danish cartoonist who drew photos of Muhammad (pbuh) and later the very famous cartoon series South Park targeted the hearts of Muslims around the world.

Initially Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) censored the specific facebook links to the pages related to “20th May Everybody Draw Muhamed Day”, but later Lahore High Court of Pakistan released an order to block the entire facebook social networking website.

The next day PTA blocked youtube, flickr, Molly Norris blog, and censored pages over Wikipedia, and other related websites which were involved in the event. Molly Norris appologised to all the Muslims around the world saying that she only created the cartoon for South Park and which was also censored, and she never declared 20th May as “Everybody Draw Muhammad Day”.

“I never started a facebook page; I never set up any place for pepole to send drawings to and I never received any drawings (I see that two European graduate students and another woman started the facebook pages)”, Molly.

She further added that she appologise all Muslims for doing what she did.

“I apologize to people of Muslim faith and ask that this ‘day’ be called off.”, Molly.

Advantages of Google Public DNS

Google has introduced its own new free public DNS server service to all the users on internet. The system is named as Google Public DNS. The basic reason for the development of Google Public DNS server is to design a server that can provide comfort to all users for web-surfing practices more rapidly, safer and trustworthy.

Speed: Server-side cache is sometimes neglected which is one of the primary reasons to slow down the speed of DNS reaction. This problem can be removed by introducing clever caching practice that helps add to the speed-up DNS reactions. Same clever caching practice has been introduced in Google Public DNS. It outfits pre-fetching process i.e. before the TTL on a user request expires; the system refreshes the record consistently for a large number of trendy domains. This allows Google Public DNS to serve many DNS requests in the round trip time it takes a packet to travel to the servers and back.
Security: Google Public DNS server provides the maximum security to all the users by implementing a new security protocol named as Domain Name System Security Extensions Protocol (DNSSEC). Using this protocol makes the service providers need to take additional measures to keep their caches protected. Overall this makes a user request more difficult for hackers and attackers to spoof valid responses by randomizing the case of query names. Also Google Public DNS includes additional data in its DNS messages.
Validity: Google Public DNS acts in accordance with with the DNS standards and gives the user an accurate and to the point results a user expects without blocking any piece of information or filtering the searched information, and provides no redirection that may slow down a user’s browsing experience.
Performance. Google Public DNS outfits “smart” caching to increase the speed of responses. It separately resolves the domain names and keeps the resolutions in the cache until their time-to-live (TTL) expires, at which point they are automatically refreshed. The cycle of caching and refreshing is performed offline, asynchronously with user requests, so that responses are almost always available directly from cache.

How to Configure Google Public DNS?

The Google Public DNS IP addresses required for DNS settings are as:
8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4

Any of the about IP address can be chosen as a primary address, and the other as a secondary address.

Open the Control Panel, click on Network and Internet. Now, click on Network and Sharing Center, and then select “Change adapter settings”.

In the next screen, select the connection that you want to configure for Google Public DNS.

If you want to change the settings for an Ethernet connection, right-click Local Area Connection, and click Properties. Or else, if you want to change the settings for a wireless connection, right-click the icon/link for the wireless network connection that you’re using, and then click Properties.

The Local Area Connection Properties dialog box will appear on the screen. Select the Networking tab. Now, under “This connection uses the following items”, click on the “Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)” and then click on the Properties button.

A new dialog box with the title of “Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) Properties” will appear on the screen. Now, select the radio box “Use the following DNS Server addresses”, and in the Preferred DNS Server text box, enter “8.8.8.8” and in the Alternate DNS Server, enter “8.8.4.4”.

Now, click OK on this dialog box to close it.

Click on Close button of the Local Area Connection Properties dialog box to close it.

Testing the changed DNS settings:
Once you’ve made the changes to your DNS settings to use Google Public DNS, you must test it to check whether the Google DNS resolver is working. For its confirmation just follows a very short and simple step: In the address bar of your browser, type a web address http://www.google.com/. If it resolves correctly and takes you to that website, bookmark the page, and then try to access the same web address again from the bookmark. If both of these tests work properly and the desired website opens properly, then it means that Google Public DNS is working correctly. If these tests do not work properly, then you must configure it again from the start.

How to switch back to the old DNS settings?
In some cases, it may also be possible to switch back to old DNS settings by using the automatic settings. For doing so, go back to the window in which you had specified the Google IP addresses, and select the option to enable obtaining DNS server addresses automatically, and/or delete the Google IP addresses. This will slip back your settings to using your ISP’s default servers.

Google recently introduced the Google Public DNS for everyone. No matter where you live, you can simply use their IP addresses for your server.

Google IP addresses are really much easier to remember than OpenDNS.
Google Public DNS implements pre-fetching, thereby increase DNS response. Ping time (Google DNS Server) – 116ms , Resolving time (Google DNS Server) -262 msec
Google Public DNS provides more security by preventing DNS spoofing attacks.
Google Open DNS gets the valid Website contents; it further provides no Content Blocking, no Redirection of invalid pages and no Filtering.

Google Introduced Public DNS Service

Google Public DNS is a free domain resolution service that anyone can use as an alternative to current DNS provider. The concept behind Google Public DNS is Google uses only two addresses: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4. The routing system simply delivers packets addressed to either address to the closest Google Public DNS location. So users in different places around the world will be talking to different instances of these addresses, making for faster round-trip times, which is important for good DNS performance.

This mechanism is called anycast. Google uses clusters of servers at each of the anycast locations that collectively cache information, allowing requests to be rerouted from one server in the cluster to another. This provides better caching and thus better performance. Furthermore, it provides a system that can pep up information that is about to expire, rather than removing old information and then having to do a lengthy lookup when it is requested again by a user.

How To: Windows Live Download, Offline Installer

Difference Between Facebook Live Feed and News Feed

Few days back facebook (as usual) changed their main home page interface again. People are really hating facebook for this change again. When the users become used to of some interface, Facebook changes it again. These rapid changes are not liked by people. Recently the main page is changed and facebook introduced two quite complex things “News Feed” and “Live Feed“. 95% of the people are still not aware them that what are the differences in both these feeds.

Facebook Live Feed vs News Feed

News Feeds shows you the position where you left your facebook last time. It shows you all the posts which were live at your last signout from facebook.

On the other hand, Live Feeds is the current on going activity on the facebook.

Whenever you login to your facebook, it shows you the News Feed page first so that you can know where you left the last time. And with the live feed you will see some numbers like 100+ or something. These numbers show the number of activities taken place among your friends since you were not on facebook.

Windows Live Messenger Strange Pop Up Message? Linked with Twitter and Facebook?

Yesterday when I logged in to my Windows Live Messenger a popup window opened and had a strange things on it. Usually such kind of text is found on the web templates which was written on it. The date mentioned on that popup message was “September 2008″ and then I clicked the Learn More button, it took me to http://msn.com

Bit.ly introduced a new short url J.MP

The race of the shortest trimming URL is still on. Recently a lot of different companies started the website to shrink/trim/short long URLs and now just because of the Twitter, things are becoming quite fast. The race is on to get the shortest URL domain, even the current short URL trimming websites have started getting even new better domain. In the month of July 2009, the very famous StumbleUpon started a short URL domain too with the name of SU.PR. Now one of the already very famous short URL website bit.ly jumped in again with even a better small URL domain named http://j.mp.

Before that as I have already mentioned in my previous article of 23 URL shortening websites that http://a.gd was the shortest URL domain and after that a new website came in with the name of http://9.gp and finally now we have no more with the name “JUMP” and the domain is quite short like http://j.mp/pickmore. Yesterday when I tried to shrink a URL the characters after j.mp/ were quite less but today when I tried, the URL became quite big. I tried trimming the URL of pickmore and the URL became something like http://j.mp/2uiBEX. It shows that the characters used after the slash are 6 so far. Whereas, if I compare this with the http://9.gp website then I’m quite happy with them. 9.GP is only using 3 characters after the slash (Oh yes, may be because its not that famous so far and as soon as the traffic starts to flow in, their URLs length will increase by that time too).

What are the benefits of RapidPoints?

When you start collecting the RapidPoints, you can then convert them and redeem them from Rapidshare. Collector’s login user can create a free premium account with their RapidPoints. (10,000 RapidPoints = 1 Month Premium Account.) Similarly, the premium account users can either create a new 30-days premium account or they can extend their current premium account.

RapidPoints policy changed:

Rapidshare Premium Account users were able to create new 30-days premium accounts for 10,000 RapidPoints, similarly they can extend their current premium account for 30-days for 10,000 RapidPoints. Recently, I just checked and found out that Rapidshare changed a little policy on creating a new premium account.

In their new policy, you can only create a new premium account if you have earned RefferPoints too. Previously you were charged 10,000 points for a new account, but now they charge 5000 points and 1 Refferpoint. Overall conclusion is that, its hard to create RefferPoints, so now it will become hard for you to create a new premium account.

What are RefferPoints?

Every new customer who signs up and buys a premium account by your refferal link, in return you get 1 RefferPoint from Rapidshare. Either you can spread a link with your Refferal ID in it, or if a customer follows your download link (for the file that is uploaded in your premium account/collector’s login) and then buys a premium account from there.

The Ultimate Pirate Bay Download

We all know, Pirate Bay, the famous torrent tracker site is being closed soon. With over 2 million torrents, Pirate Bay is one of the best sites. Pirate Bay, being sold is a nightmare for the heavy torrent users.

But an anonymous user uploaded a single torrent containing approx. 900,000 Pirate Bay torrents in it. A single massive archive of 21.3 Gigabytes! The Explanation for the missing files from the “super” torrent from Pirate Bay is:

The index has 873671 torrents, ranging from id 3211594 to 5051940 (2009-08-13)
The discrepancy is most likely due to many torrent files including the TPB tracker but has not been uploaded to the web site.

The anonymous uploader of the giant torrent told TorrentFreak that he just wanted to be assured of the torrents’ safety so he created the torrent just in case all of them would be deleted after the site is sold.

“I suppose I want us to have assurances. If the PirateBay deal disappoints us, we can just put it up again.”

Although many users won’t download the 2.13 gig torrent, but it is one of the most important torrents as it again proves that you can kill hosts, sites, trackers, whatever! But you can’t stop the users or the Technology! Its the destruction of PirateBay, not of BitTorrent. If something does happen to PirateBay, all of these torrents will show up somewhere else and it will start all over again!

Symantec started crackdown on warez websites

Symantec Corporation, the company which owns the Norton Antivirus software has started a massive crackdown against the warez website. Recently there were a lot of free downloading websites reported which were giving different software to download with cracked versions.

As a result Symantec Corporation started reporting for such websites to the hosting companies and the data-centers all over the world. The Business Software Alliance (BSA) communicated with the data centers and asked them to shut down all those illegal websites which were sharing Symantec Corporation’s Norton Antivirus products to be downloaded free of cost with cracks to it unofficially.

Symantec Corporation on the other hand is still unable to stop their software piracy over the torrent networks. They could only get their hands over some websites and as a result the full websites were shut down by the hosting companies instead of just removing the Norton Antivirus software.

Today I came across a website that is the second shortest url website that I have seen on the Internet. There are different websites which allow you to short/shrink/Trim URLs. And this one could be now on the top of the list.

http://9.gp is a new website which is giving the service to shorten your long URLs. The website is very simple, no hassle of anything, no advertisements, or whatsoever. The best part of the service so far is that the trimmed URL is even quite small right now. Only 3 characters long, which makes the shorturl only of 6 characters. It is also providing the service to have a custom short URL too. I created a short url for Pickmore and it appeared like http://9.gp/pickmore.

Gmail Username with unique feature

Gmail has a very unique and cool feature with the usernames. Previously wrote an article “Gmail Bug With UserID” but after getting the response from users and my friends, I realized I made a mistake and the article was totally wrong. Gmail does not have a bug, rather it is a unique feature with its usernames. If you have an account username@gmail.com then user.name@gmail.com or username+something@gmail.com are referred to the same username.

After getting the response from my friends @skdev and @adeelahmad I tried emailing myself in different ways. I mailed myself with talal.masood @ gmail .com and also talalmas.ood @ gmail .com and other things. I received all the emails to my original id talalmasood. When I checked that email, right beside the TO: address I found a link to google help about this feature (Receiving Someone else email). This totally explained me the feature of this google’s dot thing the usernames.

On the other hand Gmail also gives the + (plus sign) feature with username. If you have username@gmail.com you can also use username+something@gmail.com and all the emails to this address will be sent to your original email address that is username@gmail.com. With the help of this you can identify different emails. For instance I signup on many different forums of Anime Cartoons so while signing up with those forums I can use username+anime@gmail.com, with that I can distinguish between different emails (kind of filter service). This thing can also prevent me from getting spam messages. For instance while signing up to some website, lets say abcd.com I used the email address as username+abcd@gmail.com. And If this website starts to send me spam, I can easily identify and block it in my gmail.

I still can’t think of a proper title for this post, but I guess may be it’s relevant to the topic. Do you know which users got the maximum or highest number of followers? How many twitter followers you have? Hundred or may be something in Thousand figure? Thats quite less. OK, let me ask you again, how many maximum followers can you think of? What do you think would be the maximum number of followers someone has on his twitter? The answer is 1,804,029.

Yes! Ashton Kutcher (@aplusk) has 1,804,029 followers. 1.8million followers on twitter is a huge amount. And he is only following 149 people. Now coming to the second position, we have Ellen DeGeneres (@TheEllenShow) with 1,536,208 (1.5million followers) . He is also having a website just like Ashton which gives up gossips, news and photos about celebrities. On the thirst position, its NEWS. Here is the list of top 10 users with most / highest number of followers on twitter.

Ashton Kutcher (@aplusk) - 1,804,029 followers.
Ellen DeGeneres (@TheEllenShow) - 1,536,208 followers.
CNN Breaking News (@cnnbrk) - 1,507,430 followers
Britney Spears (@britneyspears) - 1,493,124 followers.
Barack Obama (@BarackObama) - 1,193,125 followers.
Twitter (@twitter) - 1,157,167 followers.
John C. Mayer (@johncmayer) - 1,085,273 followers.
Oprah Winfrey (@Oprah) - 1,068,119 followers.
Ryan Seacrest (@RyanSeacrest) - 1,018,948 followers.
Jimmy Fallon (@jimmyfallon) - 1,011,893 followers.

From the list above, I have only figured out one thing. If you are a celebrity page 6 blogger with gossips, photos and videos on your website, you will be the most followed one. On the second place they are celebrities them self. All of the top 10 in the list are either celebrities or do have some connection with celebrities (except the CNN Breaking News and Twitter itself). So, I guess the Celebrity niche is the best one so far if you need success.
